MISSION WORK IN CAMEROON - A THIRD GENERATION FIELD

The Wesleyan Church of Cameroon is a third generation mission field. That is, the work was pioneered by the Wesleyan Church of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which in turn had been established by the Pilgrim Wesleyan Church of Zambia, which had been a mission field of Global Partners from North America. In essence that makes the Cameroon work a great grandchild of Global Partners.
The work began when Rev. Jacques Kasweshi resigned as National Superintendent in the DRC in 2003. He was granted a TOOL scholarship to complete his doctorate at a seminary in Cameroon. Once there he started to make friends and to write home to the DRC about the opportunities. In 2004 the church in the DRC commissioned Rev David Kajila, their Assistant National Superintendent, to go as a missionary to start the Cameroon church. David and Cecile Kajila, with their 5 children, arrived in Yaoundé in May 2005. They commenced a house church which quickly grew to overflowing. In 2007 a suitable church building was leased.
Earlier this month Assistant Area Director Fred Cromer visited the work in Cameroon and reported that the rented facilities were filled to capacity, a number of lay leaders were being trained, and that the young congregation has a vision to plant a daughter church in
the near future.

As you pray for the Wesleyan Church of Cameroon, please pray for the following concerns:
image001 2
  • Cecile Kajila has been suffering from severe back pains. Please pray that God will provide healing.
  • Pray for God's provision of larger facilities where the church can meet.
  • Pray for direction and open doors as the church lays the ground work for a daughter congregation.
  • Several former Muslims are part of this young church and face persecution from their families. Ask God to protect them and help them to be a consistent witness to the families.

SUNDAY MORNING SERVICE VIA SKYPE
February 13th we attended and spoke at the Sunday morning worship service at Cascades Wesleyan Church in Jackson, MI. However, we did so without leaving the warmth of South Africa. The church set up a Skype link with us enabling us to watch and listen to the service on our computer and then to appear on the screen at the front of the church to give a report on what God is doing in Africa. What amazing opportunities technology offers!

Wesleyan Bible Colleges in Africa

The Wesleyan Church in Africa operates six Bible colleges located in Sierra Leone, Liberia, Congo, Zambia, Swaziland, and Mozambique. These colleges serve as the cornerstone of the church's efforts to equip men and women for ministry in the church. This past month we had the privilege to attend the annual graduations at Emmanuel Wesleyan Bible College in Swaziland and Xai Xai Bible College in Mozambique.

Mozambique 182

The role of the Bible colleges in the development of the African church is more critical than ever. With the rapid growth of the church in Africa currently being experienced the need for well-trained theologically-sound leaders is greater than ever. Even though great things are being accomplished, our schools face very significant challenges. Consider the following:

  • This past month 9 students graduated from Xai Xai Bible College and 8 from Emmanuel Wesleyan Bible College.
  • In the past seven years over 100 students have graduated from Xai Xai Bible College and are actively serving in ministry.
  • Pilgrim Wesleyan Bible College (Zambia) has a record enrollment of 32 this year. (Recent PWBC graduate Evariste Mazeaza and his family from Congo are in the photo at the top of this newsletter.)
  • Faculte Wesleyenne de Theologie (Congo) has no classrooms or library, but meets in a church and has two faculty members with earned doctorates in theology. They have an enrollment of 11 students.
  • The facilities of Gbendembu Wesleyan Bible College (Sierra Leone) were heavily damaged in the civil war and are in the process of being rebuilt by the church.
  • The Wesleyan Bible College of Liberia is working to build a multi-story building in Monrovia to house its classrooms, offices and library.
  • Faculty at over half of the colleges failed to receive their salary at some point this past year because of budgetary shortfalls.
  • All of the colleges are under African leadership, though there are GP missionaries at three schools (PWBC, EWBC, and Xai Xai).

Growth Continues in Mozambique

At the Xai Xai Bible College graduation Mozambique National Superintendent Graca Nhathelo made an impassioned plea to the graduates to back up their theological training with holy living as they assume their posts of ministry. "Your education means nothing, if the truth is not demonstrated in the way you live," he told them.

Rev. Nhathelo also spoke briefly of the continued growth of the church in Mozambique. The national board had set a goal of planting the Wesleyan Church in all ten provinces of Mozambique and made plans to do so. Five years ago they sent two young missionary church planters to Nampula province and in those five years have planted 33 churches. (GP missionaries, Jim & Karen Pickett, were sent to assist the Mozambican church in this outreach.) Long range plans included ministry to Niasa province, but it happened much sooner than planned. Several converts in Nampula were young men from Niasa who had come to Nampula looking for work. Following their conversion they returned home and this past month Rev. Nhatehlo and missionary Orai Lehman visited six churches the young converts have planted in their home province. In Matthew 16:16, Jesus said, "I will build my church . . . " and He is continuing to do so in Mozambique.

Graca Nhathelo makes a point at graduation and later chats with Bob.

Prayer Requests

Please help us pray for the following needs:

  • Pray for the recent graduates from our colleges that God will help them as they transition into ministry roles and that their ministry will bear much fruit.

  • Please pray that God will give Rev. Graca Nhathelo and the national board of Mozambique strength and wisdom as they give leadership to the rapidly growing church in their country.
  • Please pray for the staff of our Bible colleges as they look for ways to enable our schools to be financially stable and that they will have courage to take initiative to address pressing issues.
  • We will be in North America for three months before we head back to Africa. Please pray that God will help us to make the connections we need to make during this time and that He will help us find the remaining amount of faith promises we need before we are deployed.
  • All our missionary staff at Zimba Mission Hospital in Zambia are scheduled to come home for home ministries in the coming year. Pray for God's help in provision as we look for ways to cover the bases in their absence.

Praise Points

  • Thank you for praying that our daughter Tracy would find employment. She is now working at Walmart, and although it is not her ideal job, she is receiving a pay check again.
  • Tickets have been purchased for us to return to Africa in February and our schedule for our time on the field is already getting filled up. Praise God for faithful and sacrificial supporters whose giving has helped make our deployment a reality.
  • Praise God for a dedicated team of Africans and missionaries working sacrificially at our African Bible colleges. Their ministry is multiplied many times over as their students go out into their places of ministry.

Swaziland Glimpses

Our recent trip to southern Africa finished up with a whirlwind visit to Swaziland where we started our missionary career 28 years ago. We were thrilled with a number of positive signs of growth and development in the church there.

  • Pastor Walter Malaza (pictured above), a former student of ours, showed us around several "care points" he had established in rural areas. The ten "care points" serve as feeding stations for orphans, education centers for the community, and all have churches established or being planted.
care point 2
  • We saw several significant church building projects underway - all at local initiative using local resources. The white building in the foreground in the photo below is the current church building at Ntabamhloshana, which has been outgrown by the congregation necessitating the construction of the larger building at the top of the photo.

  • Despite no longer being sponsored by World Hope Canada, the ministry of the Fortress and the Children's Village continues under the leadership of Mrs. Thabsile Thwala. Some of those ministries have been scaled back due to a decrease in funding, but orphans are still be cared for and counseling services are still be offered to abused women and children.

Thwala

  • Emmanuel Wesleyan Bible College is facing challenging times, having recently lost several missionary staff members, leaving Dorcas Croft as the sole missionary at the college. Enrollment is down to 12 students, and the college is facing related financial stress. However, a solid African staff is in place giving good leadership, including newly appointed Principal, Bhekisisa Maziya (below).

Ministry Vehicle Donated

During the recent Regional Board meeting held in South Africa, Boksburg Wesleyan Church, a local South African congregation, presented a new ministry vehicle to the Southern Africa church for use in ministry in a needy District. The photo shows lay leader, Tom Eloff, making the presentation to Pastor Bill Niemack, District Superintendent of the Transkei District.

Prayer Requests

Please help us pray for the following needs:

  • We leave August 3rd for a three-month stint in Africa. Please pray that God will help us to plan and prepare appropriately and that our ministry on the field will be productive.

  • Graduation at Pilgrim Wesleyan Bible College in Zambia is July 24th. Pray for God's blessings to be on the graduates as they make the transition to ministry positions.
  • Pray for the leadership of the Zambian church as they strategize and plan for integrating the Ugandan churches into the wider church and as they look for ways of effectively providing training for the pastors of those congregations.
  • Recent surgery on Mrs. Thabsile Thwala, Director of the Fortress and the Children's Village in Swaziland revealed much more extensive concerns than originally expected. Please continue to pray that God will grant her a full recovery.

Praise Points

  • Assistant Africa Area Director, Jerry Manwaring, reported a very encouraging visit to the new church work in Uganda where there are 60 churches/preaching points.
  • Our support level has now passed the two-thirds point. Thank God for those who have responded to the need. (Full support still needs to be raised before we will be given clearance to deploy to the field long-term.)
  • Recently Bob met with the International Partnership Team for Ghana in Brockville, ON. The team consists of several Districts and local churches, Project Reach Out, and Rev. Joe Ocran, the national superintendent of Ghana and meets to help coordinate efforts to assist in the development of the Wesleyan Standard Church of Ghana. An exciting atmosphere prevailed as the team explored ways to not only strengthen the Ghana work, but discussed the vision for Ghana becoming a launching pad for outreach in countries to the north and east.

Africa Area Missionary Retreat

Easter weekend we had the privilege of sharing time with all of Global Partners' missionaries in Africa at the annual missionary retreat held in Livingstone, Zambia. What an honor to work with some of God's most prized servants!

Jerry & Jody Manwaring did a superb job of arranging the details of the retreat which was designed to meet three major needs of the missionary family:

Rest & Relaxation: Many of the missionaries serve in remote areas under difficult living conditions. The daily stress of managing life without reliable electrical service or water supply or the frustration over difficulty in locating essential basic supplies can build up over time, without even considering the stress of ministry demands. To provide relief the retreat was held at a relaxing retreat center and missionaries relaxed with activities such as a visit to Victoria Falls, a morning game drive in a nearby reserve (photo above), and a short "cruise" up the Zambezi River (below).

cruise_226x150

Professional Development: As with any profession, missionaries need to continue to develop their skills and work on increasing the effectiveness of the service. During the retreat Bob led a series of workshops to introduce the new MUME (Mutually Understood Measurable Expectations) process that Global Partners is using with all personnel to help with goal setting and ministry evaluation.

Africa Trip 418_199x150

Spiritual Renewal: Missionaries often get home sick to hear a sermon in English or to sing familiar hymns and choruses. Regular worship times were held during the retreat with missionaries leading devotional sessions; Pastor Gary VanRiper from Camden, NY bringing solid Biblical messages; vigorous singing of choruses and hymns; and the celebration of Easter with a sunrise service. Pastor-to-missionaries, Phil Nettleton, was present and available throughout the weekend for individual counseling, prayer, and encouragement.

worship_226x150

The four days flew by rapidly and now everyone has returned to their places of service seeking to exalt Christ by ministering to physical needs in hospitals and clinics, training up a new generation of Africa leaders in Bible colleges, and mentoring and encouraging emerging young leaders on the rapidly expanding "front lines" of African church growth. (Click here to see a slide show of the retreat.)

Home Ministry Suspended

Global Partners has given approval for us to suspend Home Ministry activity for August through October so we can spend that time in Africa giving attention to important ministry matters there. Among other things there are two national conferences scheduled, consultations with church leaders needed, and Brenda will be teaching a course at Emmanuel Wesleyan Bible College in Swaziland.

Since we still have not reached 100% support, the plan is for us to return to North America in November to continue support raising. Churches can contact us about scheduling a missions service or conference in November or early December.

Prayer Requests

Please help us pray for the following needs:

  • Pray for the meeting of Global Partners' Leadership Council May 26-28 as they meet to refine GP's vision and strategy for ministry.

  • Please continue to pray for God to supply the support that is needed so that we can give our full attention to the work of giving leadership to GP's work in Africa.
  • On their way home from the DRC, missionaries Mike & Cindy Helvie received word that their home in the States had been destroyed in a fire. Pray that God will comfort them and guide them as they work on rebuilding from thousands of miles away.
  • Mrs. Thabsile Thwala, Director of the Fortress and the Children's Village in Swazilan has recently had serious surgery. Please pray that God will grant her a full recovery.

Praise Points

  • Randal and Candy Cheney have just been appointed by Global Partners to serve as career missionaries in Africa. Praise God for this wonderful addition to the Africa team.
  • The missionary team that visited the Democratic Republic of Congo reported a very productive time of ministry. In Selinda Ingalls' words: 2704 km driven, 12 police checks, 8 churches visited, 6 nights stayed, 6 tolls paid, 4 languages spoken, 4 feasts eaten, 1 speeding fine, 1 driver (me), meetings with national church leaders, countless pictures taken, lots of fellowship and friends made... all in all the trips was a success and we are very thankful to be safely home!
  • Jim Pickett reports recently having baptized 53 new believers in a service in northern Mozambique. Praise God for the advance of His kingdom!

Zambia Field Visit Highlights

From March 23rd to April 13th we traveled to southern Africa to consult with church leaders and meet with Global Partners' missionaries serving in Africa. The first week and a half were spent visiting Global Partners' work in Zambia. Highlights of the visit included the following:

  • Bob met with the Zambian National Superintendent, Rev. Sitali Kakungu, along with members of the national board and several District Superintendents. They discussed issues of vision and strategy as the Zambian church continues to grow both within the country as well as in neighboring countries of Uganda and Malawi.

Africa Trip 096_resized

  • We toured several thriving Pilgrim Wesleyan churches in the capital city of Lusaka, including John Howard Pilgrim Wesleyan Church, a congregation of over 600 located in a sprawling shanty town. How exciting to view the varied ministries of this congregation as they minister to the needs in their community! What a thrill to hear the pastor tell of taking two Bible College students "fishing" the day before and of winning 46 people to Christ.

Africa Trip 109 cropped_267x154

  • We visited Zimba Mission Hospital, the sole hospital serving a population of thousands from miles around. We observed the dedication and commitment of the GP missionaries stationed there: Drs. Dan and Joan Jones, mission administrator and hostess Selinda Ingalls, and maintenance supervisor Jesse Van Horn.

Africa Trip 178 b_377x154

  • We enjoyed Sunday morning worship at Zimba Pilgrim Wesleyan Church and viewed the new church building that is presently under construction.

Africa Trip 242b_230x154

  • We had several days of fellowship with missionaries Mike & Cindy Helvie at Pilgrim Wesleyan Bible College at Jembo. (The photo at the top of the newsletter is of the road leading to Jembo.) While there Bob helped the college get started with computerized academic record keeping and consulted with the Principal, Rev. Harrison Jani (pictured below).

Africa's Generosity Continues

In last month's edition of Bits & Bytes we reported that the Sierra Leone Wesleyan Church had donated $1000 toward Haiti relief. But they were not the only Wesleyan church in Africa who responded to the need in Haiti. While in the Sunday morning service in Zimba, we learned they had collected a special offering for Haiti relief a few weeks earlier. Later, in Swaziland, Dorcas Croft, missionary serving at Emmanuel Wesleyan Bible College, also reported that the students there had just had a missions conference during which they collected faith promises designated for Haiti.

The emerging transition of African churches from being merely "receivers" to becoming "givers" is an important sign of developing maturity.

Prayer Requests

Please help us pray for the following needs:

  • Pray for the national superintendent of Zambia, Rev. Sitali Kakungu and members of the national board as they explore new areas of outreach.

  • Pray that God will give wisdom to Rev. Bhekisisa Maziya, the newly appointed Principal of Emmanuel Wesleyan Bible College in Swaziland. The college is facing significant enrollment and financial challenges.
  • Please pray for strength and encouragement for the missionaries at Zimba Mission in Zambia (Dan & Joan Jones, Selinda Ingalls, Jesse Van Horn) as they minister in the midst of high demands on their time and energy. Pray also that God will fully restore physical health and strength to Mike & Cindy Helvie at Pilgrim Wesleyan Bible College following several bouts with malaria. (Click here to see a slideshow of GP's missionaries in Zambia and their work.)
  • Pray for Rev. and Mrs. Harrison Jani, Mike and Cindy Helvie, and Selinda Ingalls as they travel to the Democratic Republic of Congo at the end of this month to minister to and encourage churches there.

Praise Points

  • Praise God for safety in our travels and for a highly profitable trip to Zambia, South Africa, and Swaziland.
  • Praise God for a record enrollment (30) at Pilgrim Wesleyan Bible College in Zambia.
  • Thank the Lord for dedicated pastors and church leaders in Zambia who are winning the lost and ministering effectively in their communities.

The "Aha" Moment

One of the major realizations that sunk in during our three weeks in Africa was how important it is for us to get deployed to the field as soon as possible. Bob keeps quite busy communicating with African leaders and missionaries through email, Skype, and telephone. It gave us the false impression that technology made it possible for him to adequately do a major portion of his job from almost anywhere in the world. This trip made us see that our physical presence adds significantly to the effectiveness and scope in which we will be able to serve the African church and our missionaries.

We discovered that the level of access to technology for African leaders and missionaries was far below the level we had anticipated. For example, at the missionary retreat Bob intended to unveil a networking website he had developed for the GP Africa team, but had to scrap the idea because the Internet connection at the retreat center was inadequate to load the site. And, missionaries at the retreat were rejoicing at the "high speed" Internet connections at the retreat because it was so far superior than what they enjoyed in their places of service!

From the first day in Lusaka with National Superintendent Sitali Kakungu it became quickly clear that emails and brief phone conversations could not substitute for face to face discussions for communicating vision and passion. The walk through Zimba Mission Hospital with Dan Jones brought about a clearer picture of the scope of ministry and challenges being faced there than a stack of newsletters, photos, formal reports, and statistics.

Would you help us as we seek to raise the remaining support needed so we can be deployed to the field? Please pray that we can make the right connections with churches and individuals who can provide the finances that still are needed. Could you act as an advocate on our behalf with acquaintances and your church to help us raise the additional support needed? Thanks for your partnership with us!
